There Is Less Urgency Than You Think

Executors frequently feel pressure to resolve things quickly. On jewelry, very little of that pressure is real.

Unhurried, itemized, and with a written record. Bring the co-executor, the attorney, or whoever else needs to see it.

Two false urgencies

The first is the sense that everything must be dealt with immediately, usually because a house is being cleared. The second is the belief that timing the metal market matters. On a typical estate holding, the difference from waiting for a better price is small — and the cost of a rushed decision on a piece that should not have been sold is not.

There is also an emotional argument for waiting that has nothing to do with price. Decisions made in the first weeks after a death are frequently revisited, and an item sold in that period cannot be. Where there is no financial pressure, there is rarely a reason not to let a few months pass.

What is worth waiting for

  • Beneficiaries to say what they want.
  • Your attorney to confirm your authority.
  • A specialist opinion on anything that might warrant one.
  • A second offer, if you want to compare.
  • Not, generally, a better metal price.

Separating the deadlines

A house being cleared has a date. Jewelry does not — it fits in a small box and can go to a safe deposit box, a drawer or a family member while everything else proceeds.

Conflating the two is what produces rushed decisions on the only part of an estate where a rushed decision is irreversible. Separate them explicitly and most of the pressure disappears.

How we handle it

  1. 01Hold an offer while you consult, without pressure.
  2. 02Encourage a second opinion where a piece warrants it.
  3. 03Tell you plainly when timing genuinely does not matter.
  4. 04Be here next month if that is when you are ready.

Separate the house clearance deadline from the jewelry decision. The house may need emptying by a date; the jewelry fits in a small box and can go in a safe deposit box or a drawer while everything else gets resolved.

Said plainly

Where we stop

We cannot advise on metal price direction and we will not pretend to. Anybody telling an executor to sell today because the price is about to move is selling, not advising.

FAQ

Common questions

Should we wait for a better gold price?
On a typical estate holding the difference is small, and we cannot predict it anyway.
Do we have to decide today?
No. Take the offer away and come back whenever.
The house has to be cleared — is that a deadline?
For the house, not for the jewelry. It fits in a box.
Should we get a second offer?
If you want to. We will hold ours.

Next step

Run it both ways before you decide.

No credit check and no obligation. Tell us what you hold and what the money is for, and if selling is the better answer for your situation you will be told that first.
